Major trade training centre opens for Knox students

It was a pleasure to visit the new KIOSC trade training centre in Knox in April to mark its official opening.  The trade training centre has been constructed with $10 million in Federal Government funding and has been an initiative drawn together by a consortium of seven local schools in our region, together with Swinburne University of Technology. A marvellous collaborative effort all round.
 
The new centre is comprised of new workshops, theory and preparation rooms, together with other infrastructure which will help students to develop trade skills in areas such as science, engineering and electro-technology.

ANZAC CENTENARY GRANTS

ANZAC commemorations are taking place in the electorate of La Trobe across this week. I look forward to being involved in a number of those services which reflect on the endeavours of those who have supported the war effort on behalf of Australia.
Between 2014 and 2018 Australia will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the First World War.
$100,000 is being made available by the Federal Government to each electorate including La Trobe to help enable community groups to commemorate the service and sacrifice of Australian service personnel in the First World War.

Examples of eligible activities under the Program include:
-          public commemorative events;
-          new First World War memorials or honour boards;
-          the restoration of existing First World War memorials or honour boards;
-          the preservation, interpretation and display of First World War wartime and military memorabilia and artefacts; and
-          relevant school projects

Better health services for our community

  • More GPs. We’re training 5.500 more doctors.
  • More Specialists. We’re training an extra 680 medical specialists.
  • More Hospital funding. We have increased support for hospitals by $20 billion since 2008. This means more hospital beds and more services including new elective surgery equipment for 120 hospitals.
  • Mental Health. We have made the biggest ever investment in mental health in Australia. A commitment of 2.2 billion to early intervention and care.

KEEPING PENALTY RATES STRONG FOR WORKERS

I recently tabled a motion in the House of Representatives calling on parliamentarians to protect strong and fair penalty rates. It's timely as Fair Work Australia is assessing the rates as part of its two-year review of modern awards. Click on video below (allow for pop-ups).
